Welcome to Car Dolly Rental Headquarters!

Glad you could stop by Car Dolly Rental HQ…We’re here to help you find the best way to transport your car whether you’re moving, bought a newer vehicle or had a break down (we really hope you didn’t have a break down).

Where Can I Find a Car Dolly Rental?

While you can buy a car dolly, it is likely that it will not be something you’ll be using often so you may want to consider renting a unit instead of buying. No point in spending more than you need to right?

The major companies who offer moving truck rentals normally have car dolly rentals available too so you can tow your car behind the truck you are renting.

It’s a good way to safely move your vehicle since you don’t want to do a bad towing job which could lead to having to get your car fixed and a big repair bill.

Here we’ll cover the three major companies in the United States that offer car dolly rental options. You should be able to find one near you! We also have information on car dolly safety measures, typical car dolly rental rates and popular RV tow dolly models.

U-haul

U-haul gives you the option of renting a car dolly to help in towing your car either with one of their trucks, or by itself if you already have something to tow it with. With the rental of the dolly, you will get ratchet-operated tire straps and vehicle security chains to keep everything safely in place during your trip.

U-Haul Tow Dolly Rental Towing Capacities

If you are driving a front-wheel drive (FWD) vehicle, you will be able to tow a maximum weight of 3,400 lbs which could possibly include some mid size cars, but these are normally heavier than this. This means, that if your car is a FWD, you would probably only be able to tow a smaller car.

If your car is a rear-wheel drive (RWD), you will be able to tow up to 3,900 lbs; however, most cars are FWD except for sports cars which are normally RWD. Also, if you decide to tow a RWD car with a car dolly from U Haul, you will need to remove the driveshaft from the car to prevent damage to the car’s drive-line.

Finally, if you decide to rent only the car dolly without one of their trucks, you will need a hitch that can carry at least 3,500 lbs, and the vehicle you are using to tow will need to weight 750lbs more than the car being towed.

Penske

Penske is another of the car dolly rental options for towing your vehicle. Their large yellow trucks might be a familiar sight if you spend a lot of time on the highway.

Penske Tow Dolly Rental Towing Capacities

Unlike U-Haul, Penske suggests that you only use the car dolly for FWD vehicles and use a car carrier for RWD and all-wheel drive (AWD) cars.

The Penske car dolly is able to tow a total of 4,300 lbs which means that it could tow bigger vehicles such as the Nissan Maxima which is considered a full-size vehicle.

When you rent a car dolly from Penske, they will take care of connecting it to your truck for you however you will need to place your car on the dolly. They will provide you with the instructions in order to do this as well as the instructions needed if you have to disconnect and reconnect your dolly from the truck at any point in your travels.

Budget

Now for our last car dolly rental option…Another major company that offers car dollies is Budget. In distinction to the other two companies, Budget offers two different types of car dollies.

Budget Tow Dolly Rental Towing Capacities

car dolly rentalThe first one is the Standard Tow Dolly which is able to tow a FWD vehicle that weighs up to 3,300 lbs, and RWD or AWD vehicle with a weight of up to 3,600 lbs.

The second dolly available from Budget is the Super Tow Dolly which can carry a maximum weight not exceeding 3,960 lbs for FWD vehicles and 4,250 lbs for AWD and RWD. As with U-haul, they recommend the car dolly especially for FWD as but a car trailer for RWD or AWD vehicles since they are more complicated to tow via dolly due to the need for driveshaft removal.

Other Possible Car Dolly Rental Options

Those are the three main companies with car dolly rental options. Although you may be able to find other local companies in your city such as independent trailer sales/rental locations, U-haul, Penske and Budget are the most well known for their car dolly rentals.

If you decide that you will be using a dolly type trailer often enough that it would be better to buy one you should be able to find a new or used model without much trouble. A few of the more popular car dolly makers are:

  • Stehl
  • MasterTow
  • Demco

There are others out there and if you like to make things or have access to a fabrication shop a it shouldn’t be hard to make a custom dolly given that parts area available and dollies are fairly simple. You should be able to find custom car dolly construction plans fairly easily as well.

To get started shopping for a dolly eBay and Craigslist are probably the top places to look first. Go with Stehl of MasterTow if you budget is on the lower side but if you have a nice RV setup and want a more fully featured product then looking at the offerings from Demco might be worth it.

Whether you decide to buy a dolly or use a car dolly rental we hope your trip(s) are safe, fun and memorable!
